When you purchase a book on trailer loading, it’s probably because you have trailer issues, or rather, you believe your horse has trailer issues. Maybe you think that fear or dominance prevents your horse from loading. Once you start reading this book however, you come to realize that nor fear, nor dominance actually are the problem. In fact, it’s not even about the trailer. Closer to the truth is that it is all about your relation and communication with the horse. Easy loading is the result of prior and proper preparation, good leadership and clear communication. But how do you get that?
In his E-book Eddy uses a step by step approach which guides you first of all through the fundamentals: how does a horse think, feel, perceive and react to the world around him? Why do horses react the way they do? This “why”-part of the book is substantial and a true eyeopener because it reveals the nature, the perspective of horses and why safety and comfort are so important to them. Then Eddy moves on and explains the “how”-part. How can you turn the trailer into this safe and comfortable place. Which strategies can you use to convert fear into curiosity (like approach and retreat) and which exercises you can do to become a more respected leader for your horse (move your horse, don’t move your feet)? But strategies are not enough. Your attitude as a human, your patience, the energy you radiate, your emotional fitness, body language, etc… do play a role in the effectiveness of the tools and strategies you use. After explaining well these crucial tools, he takes the reader on a step by step simulation on how to get started (recognize thresholds), what to look for (reward the slightest try), and, when to call it a day. Readers will particularly appreciate the fact that there are a lot of tips, examples and practical guidelines in the book which to assist you on this trailerload journey.
Important to mention however is that this trailerloading book is in fact a trailerloading-plus book. You get a lot more than you think. This author doesn’t settle for “just get’m in there”. A horse following you into the trailer is not good enough. Eddy wants the horse to load on his own. Making a horse braver, cooler, calmer is what the whole book is about. So, come to think of it; this book is way more than a trailer loading book. It’s a book that helps us to improve our communication and relation with the horse, so as to build his confidence and respect.

Last month my horse refused to load. We couldn’t get her in the trailer. She always used to load very well when we walk in front of the horse, leading her on the trailer. I searched on the internet for help and found Eddy Modde. I really liked the idea of not forcing the horse. I thought I would never be able to do it this way. The next day I started to load my horse like the concept Eddy describes in his Ebook on trailer loading. After 5 days my horse loaded herself on the trailer while I stayed outside of the trailer. I can’t find the words to describe how super that is.
The other day we sent somewhere and in a new environment my horse had a little trouble loading again. I just applied the techniques that I learned from Eddy’s Ebbok. After 20 minutes she went on the trailer by herself again. I am so happy, please continue your work. This is a really horse friendly way of trailer loading.

I wish this e-book on trailer loading had been around 15 yrs ago when I got my first horse. I would never then have got into the situation I got into with my third horse!
This book gives you the “know how” of how to get your horse to like the trailer, to load itself happily and to feel comfortable, relaxed and safe in the trailer. This book contains a wealth of information and yet is easy to follow with summaries of the important points at the end of each chapter. It is not for those looking for a “quick fix” but if you read it thoroughly and put in the work needed to prepare your horse for trailer loading then it will make it all seem easy. An extra plus for the nice illustrations in the book.

  4. Kim Steutel says:

In this book Eddy has made it possible for any horse owner to look at the trailer through the eyes of a horse, instead of through his own. Taking into account how horses act amongst each other in nature, he illustrates natural ways of communicating with the horse based on body language, mental stimulation and use of principles coming from Parelli Natural Horsemanship. In the end using these methods and principles in order to finally load the horse in the trailer willingly.

In the book the principles and methods of communication are described briefly. Although sometimes a bit short Eddy is able to present them in a way that makes them understandable for any horse owner, whether or not they have any background in natural horsemanship.
The book represents a step by step approach to understanding and acting on the things that are important to horses, mainly safety and comfort, and how to make use of these while loading the horse.

One of the things I like a lot in this book is the fact that Eddy also mentions slant load trailers. Especially in European countries we are very used to transporting our 4 legged friends forwards, thereby making it more difficult for them to keep their balance. Eddy explains why, according to his view, slant load trailers would help a lot of horses feel more comfortable while travelling. Sure made myself a mental note on this in case I plan on buying my own trailer!

Even if you do not have any problems loading your horse in a trailer I would recommend this book, just as the principles explained in it do not only apply to trailer loading, but overall communication with your horse. If you do have problems… then make sure to read it ASAP!!

  5. Afton Caso says:

Thank you for the EBook. It was very helpful. My horse tolerates hauling, but I would really like him to be more relaxed. I definitely picked up some tips. I’d be very interested in a book on tying. My gut tells me my horse would be more comfortable loose. However, it seems like people are pretty evenly divided on this issue. So I usually tie him as long as is safely possible. Anyway, I’d love to hear an expert opinion :)

    Thanks!
